Who Are Invisible Minorities
The term "visible minority" has long been used to describe individuals who are visibly non-White, and non-dominant in the societal and political realms of North America. We believe that this term was created for a positive cause but in today's society, doesn’t represent a substantial group of minorities. Our mission is to shed light on these Invisible Minorities. People who silently bear the weight of unequal treatment, grapple with their own identities or are wrongly pigeonholed due to pre-established narratives about what a minority is.
Some examples of Invisible Minorities include mixed-race individuals navigating their complex identities, marginalized people within their minority groups such as the LGBTQIA+, immigrants or refugees who look white but face unequal treatment due to cultural or linguistic differences, Indigenous people, and many more. As refugees, immigrants, and minorities, we experienced marginalization ourselves. Because of this, and because it's the right thing to do, we want to bring these unheard stories to light.
What Is The Invisible Minority Initiative?
At Poplin & Co., we firmly believe that everyone should have an equal opportunity to be heard and to share their unique stories. Unfortunately, current strategies for inclusion struggle to keep up with the rapid pace of societal evolution. The LGBTQIA+ is a perfect example of an inclusive acronym with good intentions that unfortunately doesn’t afford the people belonging to the + part the same platform as the rest. Examples like these are why we've launched the Invisible Minority initiative. It's time to shed light on the stories that deserve to be told and to empower the voices that have been sidelined for far too long.
Our Vision
At the heart of our mission is the belief that the most profound way to support Invisible Minorities is by connecting with them on a personal, one-on-one level, right within their communities. To bring this vision to life, we've crafted a collection of gender-neutral sweatshirts, each bearing the impactful and attention-grabbing "Invisible Minority" statement in a gradient to represent all the diverse groups of people. This simple yet compelling statement serves as a curious, open invitation to spark conversations with your neighbors, coworkers, and those you cross paths with every day about your unique story or the story of someone you want to support.
